CLINICAL CONTEXT

Tigecycline is a tetracycline class antibiotic indicated for the treatment of patients 18 years and older with serious infections caused by susceptible isolates of designated micro-organisms. US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)–approved indications were complicated intra-abdominal infections, complicated skin and skin structure infections, and community-acquired pneumonia.

In 2010, the FDA announced that use of tigecycline is associated with increased mortality risk in patients with hospital-acquired pneumonia and diabetic foot infections, both of which are off-label uses, as well as in patients with other severe infections.
