    Exclamation Critical values of F corresponding to P<.05 (lightface) and P<.01 (boldface)

    To construct the table of critical values of F, mathematicians have assumed four things about the underlying population that must be at least approximately satisfied for the table to be applicable to real data, including
    1. Each sample must be independent of the other samples.
    2. Each sample must be randomly selected from the population being studied.
    3. The populations from which the samples were drawn must be normally distributed.
    4. The variances of each population must be equal, even when the means are different.
    Vn is the between-groups degrees of freedom/numerator and Vn=m-1
    Vd is the within-groups degrees of freedom/denominator and Vd=m(n-1)

    V is the Greek "nu"
    m is the number of samples
    n is the size of each sample
