China Pharmaceutical University (CPU), situated in the historical and cultural city of Nanjing, is one of the “211 project” key universities affiliated to the Ministry of Education of China. It has been known for its long history and its leadership role in China’s pharmaceutical academic field. The University was founded in 1936 as China’s first independent four-year National College of Pharmacy. The University integrated the pharmacy schools from Qilu University and Soochow University in 1952 to establish the East China College of Pharmacy. It was renamed as Nanjing College of Pharmacy in 1956. In 1986, the current China Pharmaceutical University was established on the basis of the former Nanjing College of Pharmacy and the then newly established Nanjing College of Traditional Chinese Pharmacy. Over the past 80 years since its establishment, the University has been sticking to the motto of “Dedicated to Academic Excellence and Devoted to Public Health” and adopts the developmental strategy of “Beyond Pharmacy, Around Pharmacy and For Pharmacy”.

CPU provides a wide variety of disciplines including Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, Economics, Management, Arts and Law. The first-level discipline of Pharmacy was enlisted as National Key Discipline. In 2010’s ESI statistics, our pharmacology and toxicology, chemistry, as well as clinical pharmacy programs ranked the world’s top 1%. CPU offers 24 bachelor’s degree programs, 5 associate (polytechnic) programs, 24 research-oriented doctoral degree programs under the two first-level disciplines of Pharmacy and Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, 30 research-oriented master’s degree programs under 5 first-level disciplines, 23 disciplines open to post-doctoral research scholars under the two first-level disciplines of Pharmacy and Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, as well as 3 professional degree programs at the master’s level.

The University insists educational philosophy of “excellence in academics” and strives to create a student-centered collaborative learning environment, with an aim to improve knowledge, skills and personal quality for pharmaceutical talents. The University also attaches great importance to innovation training and is dedicated to foster and cultivate future elites in the pharmaceutical industry. Among China’s national medical universities, CPU is the only one that has won First Prize of National Teaching Achievements for consecutively three times. Graduate employment rate has always ranked top among MOE-affiliated universities and local colleges in Jiangsu Province.

The University promotes innovation in research and aims to develop novel medicines for public health. It has founded a national key lab for natural active ingredients and drug efficacy, and other 18 ministry-level or province-level key labs, engineering technical centers and innovative platforms. The university has established academic collaboration with overseas universities and institutions in over 40 countries and regions. In the nation’s Innovative New Drug project since 2006, the university has undertaken 40 major projects and was endowed with 215 million Yuan funding, being No.1 among all universities of the nation. Since 2006, our researchers have attained 409 patents. 11 new drugs have been approved for clinical research and 9 new drugs have been national certified. Our researchers won two 2nd Prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award. 2 technology ownerships have been transferred to pharmaceutical enterprises at a price of RMB 100 million Yuan each.

By the end of Year 2013, CPU hosts more than 15000 full-time students, in which 12000 are bachelor’s or associate degree candidates, 3300 are postgraduates. Its faculty include 859 full-time teachers. There are 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of German Academy of Sciences, 3 supported by National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, 4 “Yangtze River Scholars”, 1 supported by “Ten-Thousand Talents Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and 2 “National-level Teaching Experts.” The University is composed of two campuses, namely the Xuanwumen Campus and the Jiangning Campus, which cover a total area of about 2200 mu (146.6 hectares).

Today, CPU is striving towards its goal “a world-famous, high-level, research-oriented university.
